Revelations from America

I’m disturbed by the result of the 2016 American election. Not because I personally hate Donald or love Hilary but more because of what it shows that America will accept and tolerate.
Donald was voted in, under a democracy to be the leader of the USA. Many Christians voted for him, believing him the most godly choice; revealing a lot about the state of Christianity and the beliefs of the average Christian in America.
Maybe I was naïve because the only America I know is the America shown on popular TV shows, and that America is shiny and idealised. But whatever the reason for my earlier misconception, this election has been extremely revealing.
What has been revealed is deeply disturbing.
We have witnessed Mr Trump behaving in a racist way, referring to illegal immigrants as rapists and even accusing American Muslims as being complicit in terrorism. The KKK threw their full support behind him. Those who voted for him have said this is not a deal breaker. Either they agree with his beliefs or they don’t think these beliefs are important.
We have witnessed Mr Trump behaving in a sexist way, referring to women as pieces of ass and valuing them based on their appearance. Those who voted for him have demonstrated that this is not a deal breaker. They will accept this behaviour (whether they agree with it or not).
The world has heard Mr Trump speak about sexually assaulting women by grabbing them by the pussy, and numerous women have come forward saying they were assaulted by him. America has said this is not a deal breaker either, not important enough to stop them from electing him.
Enough Americans decided that the behaviour demonstrated by Mr Trump was acceptable. The decided that they could overlook those attitudes because either they hated Mrs Clinton or they liked something else Mr Trump said.
Yesterday voting Americans said they would tolerate and overlook racism and sexism.
In some way they believe it is worth tolerating because they believe he will fix things and “make America great again” and that is scary as hell.
