The System & Refugees

I have just read a great comment piece "Making Mayonnaise" by Michael Enderby about the Australian system and policies. Please read it, it was really interesting.
His point is not that he agrees with the policys made in Australia but that in order to support the entire system that Australia runs on, the policys had to be made.
He asks us if the mayonnaise is worth it? Is maintaining the current system important enough to sacrifice lives to?
Personally I am a member of a facebook group calling on our NZ government to double our quota of refugees. I doubt it is a huge help to the cause, but I have signed a petition.... Wow that should make all the difference!.
Anyway this is because I believe that all people in the world are my brothers and my sisters metaphorically speaking. We are a global community, and we have an obligation to share what we have with those who do not.
I have had the good fortune to be born in NZ rather than somewhere else. I didn't earn a life here, in relative freedom and security, and therefore it would be ridiculous of me to try to keep all the good NZ has to myself. I want everyone in the world to have peace and freedom and I am happy to share in order to do so.
If my sister was risking her life at sea in order to get to a safe country could I relax and enjoy my day? NO WAY! I would be doing all I could to get her to safety.
These people are my sisters and my brothers.
If our whole system and all our policies have to change then so be it.
