The Gospel is a Fairy Tale

As Tim Everton points out in this article published recently on Christian Today Australia, the gospel is a lot like a fairy tale.

Not in the sense that it is untrue, but in the sense that fairy tales are an epic struggle and often the lead character must fight against evil in order to save lives or even the world.

Which is precisely the Jesus story when you think about it.

Jesus lived in the human world, fought human temptations and ultimately triumphed over evil on the cross. Sin and death were defeated.

He had a band of brothers (the disciples) who walked with him but didn't fully understand him. He was betrayed to his death but at the end, when all seemed lost he won it all, for every one of us.

There is a magic in fairy tales, the human spirit rejoices in reading of the struggles and the happy ending that comes with a good fairy tale. These fairy tales echo of the truth of Jesus, the truth of good fighting evil and the truth of the happy ending for those who believe.

So let’s remember that in one sense we are living in a fairy tale; that ultimately good has already triumphed over evil and that we just have to accept the truth of Jesus to have the happy ending of heaven.

There will be struggles on our journey in this life, but what fairy tale doesn’t have an epic struggle or two?

The happy ending makes the struggle worthwhile in the end, or at least that’s what I’ve learnt from fairy tales.
