Arohanui:

God's big love

The Holy Spirit with us now

I’ve been thinking about spirituality and the Holy Spirit and had a thought I would like to share with you (as I am a sharing type person).

OT: Father God

It is easy to see in the Old Testament that God himself interacted with people.

Adam and Eve walked with him in the garden, Moses spoke with him and was transfigured by seeing his glory as he passed by.

God was incredibly present to his people, and communicated clearly, possibly with an audible voice; their actual ears heard his actual voice.

While God in a complex and confusing way is both himself and all three of the aspects, (Father, Son and Spirit) it appears to me that the Old Testament interactions were primarily with Father God.

Jesus in the Gospels

The Gospels however tell of how Jesus became a human and lived among us, as one of us. (which is a pretty incredible, amazing thing really - God himself came down to experience life on earth as one of us!)

During this time Gods revelation to his people was in Jesus.

The adventures of the young church and the Holy Spirit

Most of the remainder of the NT is focussed on how the young church moved through the leading of the Holy Spirit. Gods primary revelation to mankind of himself was through his Spirit.

We are still in this time today.

We don’t always know how to interact with the Spirit. But we have the historical revelation of God the father, of Jesus the son AND we have the very present comfort and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

We may be living in “end times” but we are also incredibly blessed to have this fullness of the revelation of the one we follow both historically, and the present leading of the Spirit.

We need the power and anointing of the Holy Spirit on us. We (I do certainly) need a more complete understanding of the Holy Spirit and how he works, how he interacts with us and what we can do to grow in him.

Let’s start to really value the Holy Spirit, to focus on him as the one we can interact with on a daily basis, and the one who will lead us into all truth.

What I’m doing

For me, I am making an effort to journal a wee paragraph I have called “God’s word to me today”. Each day I take a few minutes to stop and think about what I feel the Holy Spirit has been saying to me, to think about what sort of guidance I am receiving and to write down any scripture verses that come to mind and seem relevant or important today.

Sometimes I just shut my eyes and ask “Holy Spirit, God – what do you want to say to me” and I get feelings and words from God.

For me it’s often along the lines of “You are fearfully and wonderfully made. I LOVE you” but it always lines up with scripture, I never get “I hate you, you don’t try hard enough” for example and I can say with confidence that if you think you feel something that doesn’t fit with scripture you need to consider that it is not from God (and REJECT it).

Sometimes I get the feeling to read more about a topic, such as healing; or to spend time singing or to pray for someone or something specific. Whatever it is I write it down and later try to ensure I act on it.

What I’ve noticed

As I do this I have realised, that every day I have something to write. Every day the Holy Spirit has been revealing something to me, maybe through my friends, my work, my ipod listening, my bible reading or even just by giving me a feeling in my heart.

The interesting part is that if I wasn’t taking the time to stop and think, I would have missed this guidance, I would never have realised that he is revealing things to me at all. I would have missed it!

How terrible is that really? I might have thought God didn’t care about me, that I was alone, that I was doing life on my own, that God wasn’t speaking to me etc. All it took was me to dedicate a few minutes each day to stop, think and write.
