Up in Arms
I was introduced to this song a few months ago by my sister, and I immediately loved it. Now I’ve purchased it from itunes it plays almost every day on my ipod and I’ve started to think about why I love it.
Obviously it’s a well written song with lovely music, but what was there about it that just got me in the gut? It is one phrase, “Your love has got me up in arms again”.
I don’t know if I am interpreting it the way the songwriters intended, and I don’t really care. For me I hear that God loves me so now I need to stand up and love others.
To me it is a song of action and reaction. God loves us, his love is wild and abandoned, it is greater than we can ever know; all encompassing. The action of his love causes a reaction from us, we get up in arms again.
I believe God is calling us to get up in arms; to take up the fight in some way to right wrongs in this world and show his love.
The song is about how Gods love for us actually takes us into a place where we are willing to fight. To not only pray “your kingdom come” but to deliberately and willingly take part in bringing his kingdom to earth.
For those who don’t know his love, for those who are experiencing hardship or any situation where his love is not evident. He is calling us to respond, as people who experiences his love; to get up in arms.
Wherever discrimination, injustice and unkindness reign, his love means we stand to say NO. We must speak for those who cannot speak and fight for those who cannot fight.
We know that God doesn’t want the world to be the way it is. We have been changed by his love so we can get up in arms and change the world. And so we should.
What do you think?
